The Truth of Freedom pays tribute to Juneteenth, the national holiday commemorating news of the Emancipation Proclamation reaching the last of enslaved Africans in 1865, two years after it was issued.
This year’s theme, Resistance and Revolution, stands in defense of truth that often comes too late. Taking its lead from the Black Arts Movement which celebrates its 60th year in 2025, The Truth of Freedom: Resistance and Revolution, takes its place in the revival of Black cultural empowerment through artistic expression, inspired by the rich iconography, messaging, and innovation of the movement’s art.
The exhibit explores the historical roots of Black resistance while expanding the tradition of envisioning social justice through artistic creation with its displays of modern imagery, text, and technology.
